(The Gotthard Electric Railway)

Trieb, Anton, 1925

An impressive poster lithograph from 1925, designed by Anton Trieb to advertise the Gotthard railway. A ride through the Alps must have inspired awe in any traveler in the 1920s (not to say that it no longer does today…).

The building of the Gotthard railway line lasted from 1872 to 1882. The project was driven to a great extent by Alfred Escher, a rich and influential Zurich banker and politician. The tunnel was excavated and constructed by about 15 000 Italian workers, who lived in harrowing conditions. At 15 kilometres, the Gotthard tunnel was the longest in the world at the time it was completed.
