Gotthardbahn - L’Italie par le St. Gothard - Italy via St. Gothard Railway - Lucerne-Milan
(Gotthard Railway - Lucerne-Milan)

D’Alési, Hugo F., 1892

This poster comes from the early days of the Gotthard Railway, which had only just been inaugurated ten years previously and established a transalpine train connection between Switzerland and Italy. The advertisement shows romantic images of three destinations made available to late 19th century travellers by the Gotthard line: Lake Lucerne with Tell’s chapel, Lake Maggiore with the church of Madonna del Sasso, and the final destination - the Gulf of Naples with a smoking Mount Vesuvius in the background.
